No, there is no yeast in CHIRP in the traditional sense. Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic, friendly yeast that acts as a probiotic in the gut to keep other pathogenic bacteria and yeast in check. Common baking yeast and Brewer’s yeast comes from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is NOT the same as boulardii.

We chose soil-based probiotics to put in our CHIRP Superfood Topper because they are better able to survive the acidic environment of the stomach. When exposed to harsh conditions, these special probiotics form tough shells to protect themselves. Research has shown that this allows more of them to make it to the intestines where they can contribute to the gut’s healthy microbiome.

Prebiotics are a type of fiber that microbiotics in the gut feed on. Most prebiotics in nature come from plants in the form of plant cellulose. Unfortunately, dogs do not process ingredients that contain plant fiber very well.

Prebiotic chitin is very similar to plant cellulose and consumed by microbes in the gut in the same way. But this type of “fiber” comes from animals, most abundantly, from insects. Our organic cricket powder provides plenty of gut-feeding prebiotic chitin that won’t irritate your dog’s system.

Fungal-based enzymes are derived from fungi. Unlike plant enzymes, they are able to survive both acidic and alkaline environments. This means they remain intact and active through the digestive process so they can effectively help break down food in the gut and get the most benefit out of it.

We ask, why not cricket powder? This versatile protein provides all 10 essential amino acids and the healthy fatty acids your dog needs. Plus, crickets are loaded with vitamins and minerals, including iron, B12, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.

Unlike meat, crickets are also a great source of antioxidants that help fight free radicals and inflammation. Insects make a much better source of these vital substances than fruits and veggies, which dogs struggle to process.

CHIRP Superfood Topping targets allergies through multiple pathways. Soil-based probiotics and prebiotic chitin from cricket powder strengthen the gut biome. Combined with fungal-based enzymes that aid in digestion, these ingredients help soothe and repair the gut, the origin of most allergy problems.

To further support the immune system, we added a powerful reishi mushroom blend. These medicinal mushrooms support a normal immune and inflammatory response to reduce allergy symptoms. And nutrient-dense cricket powder and kelp fill nutritional gaps to support optimal overall health.

This topper is highly palatable and most dogs will gobble it up no matter how you present it.

Crickets and other insects are not known to cause allergic reactions in dogs. For most dogs, crickets are a novel protein that does not cause allergic reactions the way meat, legumes, and grains often do.

In fact, crickets are far easier for dogs to digest than meat and plants. This means the protein in them is easily broken down and utilized by the body. When food is well-digested, it is much less likely the immune system will react to it.

Dogs with a known shellfish allergy. While rare, dogs with this allergy may have a reaction to crickets.

The exoskeletons of crickets are made of chitin, a type of fibrous polysaccharide biopolymer similar to plant cellulose. While it may feel hard and spiky, this substance is actually easier for dogs to digest than plant fiber. And it is consumed by the gut microbiota at the same rate as prebiotic fiber.

All this is to say, dogs digest cricket exoskeletons with ease. And, more importantly, this part of our CHIRP Superfood Topper actually helps support a healthy gut.

CHIRP Superfood Topper is specially formulated to help dogs recover from food allergies. Its unique formula contains powerful ingredients that support the gut and the immune system and contains no added fillers and preservatives like most traditional dog food toppers do. Some of those cheap fillers and preservatives can actually cause allergies in dogs.
