In fact, crickets are far easier for dogs to digest than meat and plants. This means the protein in them is easily broken down and utilized by the body. When food is well-digested, it is much less likely the immune system will react to it.

The exoskeletons of crickets are made of chitin, a type of fibrous polysaccharide biopolymer similar to plant cellulose. While it may feel hard and spiky, this substance is actually easier for dogs to digest than plant fiber. And it is consumed by the gut microbiota at the same rate as prebiotic fiber.
